This too shall pass …
Bonjour! It has been very quiet on this blog since the lock down. Indeed, a very difficult month of “Stay home, Stay safe”. Everybody’s daily schedule has been topsy-turvy. We miss our regular morning walks, our usual visits to the mall or market or bank, getting a haircut or dental appointment or stopovers for our favourite cuppa and roti bakar. No prayers in the church, temple or mosque. But we do get loads and loads of WhatsApp messages! More importantly, for the eating kakis, we miss our casual get-togethers to chit-chat, exchange notes and try new cuisines. Simply put, we have got to learn to treasure this simple moments, even more.
Covid 19 has derailed our eating kaki’s flexi schedules somewhat! Our weekly or bimonthly get together. We have also talked about taking a luxury cruise together in 2020 where we could wake up to a sumptuous morning breakfast looking at clear blue skies in the open seas. Then, live it up with a lavish buffet lunch at a fabulous restaurant and later, order an ala carte dinner in the grand banquet hall. In between these meals, we could pamper ourselves with tea-time delicacies and all-day enthralling entertainment! To top it all, enjoy the excursions at the ports of call and taste the local cuisine. Alas, it looks highly unlikely now with alarming corona virus incidences and even deaths on cruises.
Perhaps we can plan something less elaborate, like a weekend break in Melaka to try out its famous local cuisine and savour its rich history. Penang nyonya cooking versus Melaka’s peranakan? How about the spicy Devil’s chicken, charcoal grilled fish and fried calamari at Ujong Pasir? And the lovely walkabout at Jonker Walk with its harmonious blend of culture? Centuries old mosques, temples, churches and Palladian mansions in its vicinity. Jonker Street is also a mecca for all kinds of food. Sate celup, rice ball chicken rice, cendol gula Melaka, grilled seafood and the like. Something worth thinking about, no? Idle minds yearning for food?!
For the first quarter of the year, we managed to squeeze in six get-togethers. We are pleased to note that our small circle of makan-kakis has expanded with Willie and Mun Ying joining us. Raymond and Paley have also made their presence felt.
By the way, Happy Birthday to our April boy, Raymond!
We should count our blessings as all of us have avoided the deadly virus. In these challenging times, we should give our fullest support to the MCO lock down and pray that our front-liners, family members and friends will get out of this pandemic unscathed. Let us hope we will be able to get back to normalcy in June. Meanwhile, “Stay safe, stay home, stay healthy!” Worry not, this too shall pass!
