8/1/2019 - Soon Chi Seafood Restaurant

Soon Chi Seafood is an unpretentious restaurant located in Sungai Bakap, Penang. Accessible via the Sultan Abdul Halim Bridge, Soon Chi has been around for nearly 30 years and they have established quite a reputation of serving delicious crab porridge.

The elderly teochew taukeh suggested that we ordered two crabs for six persons. Soon enough, the giant bowl came with sizeable chunks of meaty crabs and a most flavourful porridge. At RM160 for the giant bowl (meant for 8 persons), you get your money’s worth. And their reputation very well intact.

Our order of a kerabu dish with slices of homemade tofu looked simple and yet it tasted excellent. We also had their other specialties. The deep fried pomfret (phang kut tau tay) where every part of the fish is totally edible. The chef was very generous with the portions of “fish bone crackers”.

A first time for most of us.

The curry assam prawns with laksa noodles was probably the stand-out dish. The prawns were big and fresh, and the curry blended well with the laksa noodles. The fried hor fun (Sungai Bakap version) was equally appetizing. Hats off to the chef!

Our last dish, mixed vegetables with squid was a bit disappointing.
A word of caution – these small town restaurants come with very big servings.
So, make sure you order small or medium size dishes or you will have to tapau some dishes back!

Please note that Soon Chi is closed on Wednesdays.
