Shan Cheng
26thJune 2019
The June-July window period always brings excitement to lots of Penangites and a whole lot of out-station visitors too. Yes, we are talking about the season of the King of Fruits, the durian! So, we decided to add our thorny encounter at Shan Cheng @ Pondok Upeh, Balik Pulau to our blog.
The good news is that the Shan Cheng Estate does not use poisonous pesticides. So claims Gary, the young and friendly durian seller with a sound knowledge of the fruit. We believed him as one customer actually complained of worms in one of the fruits (they duly replaced another) and there were flies around. Gary also claimed that many of their durian trees are between 25 to 50 years old. “Older trees have deeper and stronger roots and thus provide much nutrients”. They are grown on the hill slopes behind the stall.
Prices are a little higher than expected but the durians were very good. We had a selection of ang hare (red prawn), ang jin, hor lor, cheh pueh (green skin) and the pricey musang king (@ RM58 per kilo?!). The ang hare, in particular is excellent, smooth and silky with a strong hint of liquor.

We all went home, very satisfied! Call Gary first (012 4098788) to reserve your favourites to avoid disappointment.
