19/10/2018 - Eryna Fish Head Café, Kpg Kuala Sg.Pinang

Visitors from outside Balik Pulau hardly make a trip, if ever, to the remote and idyllic fishing village of Kuala Sungai Pinang. If they do, I am sure the pulling factor would be Eryna Fish Head Café.

The café has already made a name for itself in this part of the island with its famous fresh and authentic Malay clay pot curry fish head and its accompanying seafood dishes.

We drove there in two cars at 11.00 am as we wanted to beat the expected lunch queue. Surprisingly, road conditions were good and we were at the jetty in less than an hour. A dozen or so fishing boats greeted us as we approached the café. You can actually purchase fish at a market stall nearby but it was closed due to the Friday prayers.

There was a nice gazebo built for patrons behind the place where we ordered our dishes. We decided on some ready-cooked dishes and ordered two curry fish-heads. Before long, our ready-cooked dishes arrived. Vincent had insisted that the fried chicken and the fried fish be fried again. Good decision, as the dishes were very tasty when served hot. We also had salted eggs and fried bitter gourd.

The arrival of the main dish of curry fish heads was rather uplifting! It came in a seasoned claypot, really steaming and piping hot. Full of onions, tomatoes, lady fingers and an assortment of other spices.

Wonderful fragrance and the sound of bubbling hot curry, best in the world!

Digging in, we found the red snappers to be fresh and fleshy. The Malay-styled curry fish heads were cooked to perfection and their pricing is very reasonable.

For our next visit (definitely worth another visit!), we will order the Sembilang (sea catfish) or Jenahak (golden snapper).

Our only complaint is that the local cats are a nuisance! Their presence put the hygiene of the place in question.

If you are heading towards Kuala Sungai Pinang for their famous claypot curry, make sure you make a booking (012 416 4445). The café is open at 10.30 am and they only serve lunch. The café is closed on Tuesdays.

A hearty lunch without coffee and/or toying with our little gadget is not complete.
