3/7/2018 - Ippudo Has Arrived!

World-acclaimed Ippudo has arrived in Gurney Penang!

On Day 2 of its opening, we decided to try our luck knowing very well that a long queue is to be expected. So we decided to go 15 minutes before the opening hour (11.00 am) and we were pleasantly surprised that we were second in the line. In no time the queue had swelled.

For starters, we tried the best seller pork buns. Soft bread buns enveloping a thin slice of juicy braised pork belly with the unique Ippudo sauce. Just nice to whet our appetites.

However, the chicken ishiyaki (hot plate seared chicken cutlets) were just about average.

For the mains, each of us tried different ramens. Yes, slurpy ramen – what Ippudo is famous for! There’s the Ippudo Kuro special, Akamaru Special and Karaka Special. As we are not ardent Japanese foodies, we guessed that the spicy dishes came in the red bowls while the black bowls were the original broth. Whatever the ingredients they dished in, be it the crispy seaweed, spring onions, miso paste, garlic or whatever, the rich and thick broth turned out just right and insanely flavourful. The chewy ramen and an almost perfect half-boiled egg completed our Ippudo serving. No need to add any toppings! The deep bowls were all emptied by the time we have our macha ice-cream and green tea.

With the tag line “to continuously innovate to remain true”, Ippudo ramen lives up to its billing, that is to provide an exquisite and delightful ramen dining experience for its customers throughout the world.

To paraphrase General MacArthur, “I shall return”. Arigato gozaimasu!

The epicures are in town...
