12/6/2019 - Winn's Cafe The Nyonya Flavour

Initially, we were going to try out the highly touted Nona Bali but to our dismay it was closed on that day.  We then decided on Winn’s Cafe at Jalan Irradwaddi instead.
Winn’s tagline is “the Nyonya Flavours” and that is what we were looking forward to!

The nasi ulam (steamed fragrant rice with a multitude of finely chopped herbs) is a must-try dish. Not many restaurants in Penang serves nasi ulam and its preparation is really time-consuming.  And this is one restaurant that has really fine-blended all the herbs that makes this dish so unique. It came with a dash of lime and sambal!

The kapitan chicken, tao yu bak (black sauce glazed pork belly) and otak-otak are all nyonya classics and Winn’s get top marks for such delicious servings.

We also ordered the perut ikan, curry chicken, cucur udang (prawn fritters) and lor bak. Thumbs up too!

Somehow the kiam hu kut gulai (salted fish curry) was not to our liking. The salted fish did not pull through the dish.

The steam rice came with a bluish tint of bunga telang.

Our invited Indon friends, Hwi Ling, Bethada and Mathhisa also gave the thumbs-up to the nyonya flavours.  All in all, it was a Winner at Winn’s!
